Day 3 – Today it’s the ‘Red’ Loop routing so we played the course counter-clockwise. Hats on backwards!
Our starter yesterday on the Black tried to end some of the confusion about how the hole we’d play that day would be numbered when we played the Red (since we’re reversing direction). His tip – the sum of the course numbers for each day would equal ‘18’. So, the hole we played as ‘3’ on the Black would be hole ‘15’ on the Red, etc. ‘4’ yesterday would be ’14’ today. Otay – cleared that up!
I, as I’m sure a few others, tried to gaze backwards yesterday to anticipate what each of the holes would look like from a different approach. Clear on a few, mysterious on most. I did remember the traps though – entered a few from both directions! For me, I played a totally different course. On both, land in front and trust the bounce like a true links course was the best strategy. Greens were firm, tough, and whatever you do – don’t land above the hole.
The game for our morning round on the Loop, Red was ‘Fourball’, match play. Team members play as partners with each playing their own ball tee to green. Team scores for each hole are the lowest of the two net scores. Low team score wins the hole. Most holes won wins the match.
> Match 1 – Ron & Mike (Bolo) vs. A & Don (Bozo)
> Match 2 – Dick & Kevin (Bolo) vs. Jerry & Terry (Bozo)
> It’s a Bolo sweep!
> Bolos up +2 in Match 1
> Bolos up +1 Match 2
> Low Gross – Jerry @ 83
> Low Net – Kevin @ 76
The afternoon format on Bootlegger was ‘Par 3 Poker’. Up to a group of 8 may head out together so, what the heck, we did the ‘full Monty’!
In the game, two, four-man teams play against each other. A player gets a playing card for each green hit on a tee shot. The team with the player whose individual Poker playing hand is best wins
> It’s a Dick (Bolo) win with a pair of ‘9s’. I love this game!
End of day 3 team scores:
> Bozos – 3 points
> Bolos – 10 points
After golf, another ride up to Grayling for dinner. This time we hit ‘Spike’s Keg O’ Nails’ famous as the home of the ‘Spikeburger’. I braved the smelt. OK. Not like the N. Indiana version of my yout, but not bad!
