No golf today – probably a good thing as we head into the final stretch.
A short drive from Stonehaven is Dunnottar Castle, a ruined medieval fortress located on a rocky headland. The castle is prominent in Scottish history from the Picts up through the civil wars. Bummer that the weather is so ‘Scottish’ – rain & heavy fog. Still awesome. There is a spectacular trail which runs from the Castle north to Stonehaven and passes the Stonehaven war memorial – a tribute to Scottish casualties during the two world wars. Moving (even in the fog). Quite a few pheasants along the trail.
We’re heading into our final golfing area – St. Andrews. It’s not a long drive and after a nice lunch at the Creel Inn in Catterline, our driver Paul routes us through Dundee where we get a good look at the massive River Tay (1-1/2 miles wide at this point) and the 360 vistas of Fife County. Our lodging for the next 5 nights is the Brownlee Guest House a 5-minute walk from the Old Course and a block from the Greyfriar Pub.
FANTASTIC NEWS – WE HAD SUCCESS IN THE OPEN BALLOT FOR THE OLD COURSE (our 2nd try) AND HAVE TEE TIMES FOR THURSDAY!!
