Scotland at last!
After a red-eye flight from Arkansas, through O’Hare to Edinburgh for Kevin and a similar overnighter for Bill, Don & Dick via Detroit & Amsterdam to Glasgow we hooked up at the Glasgow airport and shuttled to the Piersland Hotel in Troon for our 3-night stay in Ayrshire. Amazingly, clubs & luggage arrived without hassle. Can’t say all weren’t just a bit concerned given the recent problems with European flights.
The Piersland is an interesting country house, converted to a small hotel and is located across the road from the Royal Troon club. The house was built as a private residence in 1899 and was the home of Sir Alexander Walker, grandson of Johnnie Walker.
Blessed by typical Scottish weather (overcast & drizzle), we hiked into Troon village for dinner & an opening day pint. We stumbled across ‘Number 47’, a nice, local, dog friendly pub near the harbor. Some real ales on tap on a great tender. Good omen for the trip! Dinner at the nearby ‘Lido’ in the village and a kick-off dram of ‘Balvenie Double Wood’ finished off a long day and a half of travel properly.
