Golf today was at the Tain Golf Club some nine miles south of Dornoch. Tain was founded in 1890 and designed by Old Tom Morris. It’s an interesting and challenging course with a mix of links & heathland holes and views up and down the Dornoch Firth and mountains in the background. Many of the greens are in their original locations.
For our round: bunkers, gorse, & fierce winds!! The winds got up to 40 mph for most of the round. Wild stuff – great at our backs, death when hitting in to. Hitting a massive driver for 140 yards – geez. Our forecaddie, Shaun, was good fun and saved us a number of GBP in lost balls!
After play, a pint, and soup in ‘Old Toms Pub’ at the Tain course our driver Alda (Iain’s mum) handled getting us to/from the course. She was nearly as entertaining as he with a great sense of humor, always laughing – perfect.
The wind finally dropped off after our return to Dornoch and the evening was gorgeous so we took a walk through the public area of the course down to Dornoch beach. Fantastic views. Dinner at the Royal Golf Hotel wrapped up a special day.
