No golf today.
We arranged for our driver, Iain McLeod, to give us a tour of the eastern Highlands. Iain owns a small fleet of vans for charters and is from the isle of Skye. He performed magnificently.
Our first stop is in Embro, a short drive north of Dornoch. A new course is in the process of being approved for development with potential completion in 2020. ‘Coul Links’ (named after the Coul family farm grounds on which the course will be built) is a Coore & Crenshaw project. The course will route through firth-side dunes – a gorgeous property.
Next up is a tour of Dunrobin Castle and a falconry exhibit in the castle’s garden. It’s quite surprising how intelligent the birds are and how they respond to training. They learn (and respond to) their names in one day and quickly absorb training. On the way back towards Inverness we visit the Dalmore Distillery for a tour of operations & small tasting.
In the afternoon, we head to the area near Culloden for lunch at the Cawdor Tavern (known for their selection of Orkney Beers), a stop at the Culloden Viaduct (largest in the UK), Clava Cairns (Neolithic burial & ceremonial grounds) and the Culloden Battlefield. A nice way to spend a few hours.
To wrap things up, Iain takes us to the lessor-visited south shore of Loch Ness near Dores. The water is cold and the views spectacular. Best of all is Steve Feltham’s “utopia”. Housed in a re-purposed former mobile library on the beach since 1991, Feltham has become a full-time Nessie hunter. His BBC video “Desperately Seeking Nessie” is a must-watched classic. Great stuff.

Hey, I’ve seen that Nessie before. Looking good guys.
I see an old, decrepit creature! And there is something out there in the water, too!
