Play today is at Gullane No. 1, one of the top tracks in Scotland. The course has been an Open qualifier and hosted the men and ladies Scottish Open along with amateur championships. Golf Magazine has rated the par five 3rd hole as one of best holes in all of golf.
Like Gullane courses 2 & 3, the track runs up Gullane Hill and down to the sea. There are great views of the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh, & Fife. Gullane Hill is the highest point in East Lothian and really exposed to the wind. And, it was windy today with gusts estimated at 40-50 mph at times! Check out the videos below.
We stopped in at the ‘Old Clubhouse’ pub adjacent to Gullane’s kid’s course after golf and ran into two of our caddies there. ‘Freshly caught haggis’ on the menu!
After dropping our clubs at the Lodge we caught a bus into Edinburgh to check out pubs along the Royal Mile. One of our fellow bus mates was a retired historian now living in North Berwick (and haunts the Auld Hoose pub) who spent his working life in Berlin.
The Mile is in Edinburgh’s Old Town, a big, uphill hike from the Waverly Station bus stop. It’s a busy place. Access to the Castle was blocked off for an upcoming event – same as last time we were in Edinburgh! We took a shot at getting into the ‘Scotch Whisky Experience’ but struck out. Lot’s of pubs, for sure. We had pints in a few and stuck our heads inside others including the Jolly Judge, Malt Shovel, the Halfway House, Mitre Bar, and No.1 High St. Dinner was at the 1st floor (2nd for us Americans) ‘Shamoli Thai & Indian Restaurant’. Train home.
