We switched lodging today from No. 12 Hotel in the main part of the village to the Golf Lodge, a short walk up the road. It was too early for us to check in at the Lodge so the folks there set aside a place to store our gear while we got our round in.
Kilspindie was formed in 1867 as ‘Luffness’ and was the 35th registered golf course in the world. Years later the club split in two with one half staying as the Luffness New GC and the remaining members built a new course they named Kilspindie on links bordering Craigielaw Farm. Design was by Willie Park Jr. & Ben Sayers.
The course is a hidden gem. To get there we drove through the village of Aberlady then followed a single-track road through a nature preserve. It’s a traditional Scottish links course with views of Edinburgh’s profile and Arthur’s Seat.
The fog from the last few days had blown off but it was windy and cold. The tide was out exposing huge mudflats. Great golf. Plus, we rain into Iaian, Kevin’s caddy from yesterday’s round at North Berwick.
After golf we checked into the North Berwick Golf Lodge, a small, family-run B&B housed in a Victorian townhouse run by Tom & Emma Hill along with Franky, head of security. We reloaded our whisky stash with a stop at the amazing Lockett Bros shop. Ardnamuchan Sauternes Cask! Emma booked our dinner at the Nether Abbey restaurant across the street from the lodge. Too easy!
