We played at the Dunaverty Golf Course in the village of Southend on the south edge of the Kintyre peninsula. The course is another hidden gem that popped up on the radar screen and got really good vibes from anyone we asked. It sits on ground around Dunaverty Rock where fortifications once sheltered Robert the Bruce and is most famous for a conflict between warring clans which ended with the surrender and massacre of some 300 defenders of the fort. We made sure to be very nice to the locals.
They’ve been without a club manager for a while so I was unable to secure an advance tee time. Our caddy at the Dunes (Willie) was the grounds keeper for 40+ years and said we’d be cool just walking on. One caveat – get there before the ‘Headbanger’ group which has weekly times from 10-11! He suggested they were REALLY slow. We took his advice and squeezed in a slot or two before the bangers. The twosome in front of us was a couple from Sweden doing a tour of UK courses!
The weather was perfect – sunny and calm. We played in short sleeves and questioned our decisions to leave the shorts at home. Spectacular views everywhere with Sanda Island to the south, Ailsa Craig and Ayrshire to the east and Northern Ireland to the southwest. Great, friendly folk at the course. Good fun.
Sadly, we missed a chance to enjoy what were described as the best sweets on the peninsula a short walk from the course at the Muneroy Tearoom. Fully booked for lunch & after. We found solace at the hotel pub next door.
Dinner in Campbeltown at the ‘42’ restaurant after a quick stop at the Black Sheep Pub. Good food, small portions, and overpriced. 1 out of 3 not bad I guess.

What incredible pictures and commentary. Have been watching the blog with anticipation for the next day’s adventure. Can’t believe that I passed twice on a golf trip to Scotland. MAJOR REGRETS.
Good stuff Mike. Pictures aren’t doing it justice. Cheers!
Keep Bill away from the sheep‼️
