Today is a travel day (no golf – gasp!). We’re moving from the island of Arran to the Kintyre peninsula by ferry. It’s about a 40-minute drive from our lodging in Blackwaterfoot to the vessel in Lochranza. Ferry times are locked and a driver scheduled to pick us up on the other end of the ferry route from the ferry dock at Claonaig (Kintyre) when we find out our booked driver to Lochranza insists he doesn’t work on Sunday anymore. Nice, eh? Lots of scrambling to find a replacement.
There’s not much in Lochranza and even less in Claonaig excepting the magnificent scenery. While waiting for the ferry, Kevin & I walked to the Lochranza castle ruin and he plundered the ‘Sandwich Shop’ trailer. Good reports on the food.
After the short ferry ride on the ‘Catriona’, pride of the Lochranza to Claonaig fleet, we ended up with two cars for the long drive down the Kintyre peninsula to our lodging in Machrihanish Village. I rode with Emma (an English transplant) who previously lived a few miles from friends in Maldon, Essex. Small world and lots of good conversation!
We’re in the Ugadale Cottages. Quite nice with two bedrooms, common area and small kitchenette. Breakfast is served in the nearby Ugadale hotel. The ‘Old Clubhouse Pub’ where we dined (haggis nachos!) is a sand wedge from our cottage. Hard to beat!
Across the street from the Ugadale group is the historic Machrihanish Championship course. We won’t play there for a few days yet but stopped at the clubhouse and strolled the 1st three holes to get the vibe. Very cool.
