We saved the best for last!
The Ross Bridge course in Hoover is another property on land formerly owned and mined by U.S.Steel. The course meanders through the rolling landscape of the Shannon Valley. From the tips, Ross Bridge is the fifth-longest course in the world. We didn’t play those!
The course is parkland-style course with ten holes routed along the banks of two lakes connected by a spectacular waterfall dropping 80 feet between the 9th and 18th greens. A gristmill added to the waterfall adds to the scenery.
The main game is another ‘mano a mano’ – singles match play. The player with the lowest net score for each foursome wins a hole. The player in each foursome winning the most holes takes the match.
Since it’s our final day of play, there is also a side game – ‘Three Ugly Sisters’. At the end of play each player picks the holes with the three worst scores (the ‘Ugly Sisters’) and deducts them from their net score. The game score is the player’s net total score minus the combined net score for the 3 uglies. Lowest game score in each foursome wins.
> Match 1 – Chip, Ron, Mike, Ed
> Match 2 – Don, Dick, Terry, Brian
> Match 3 – Jerry, Bill, Sarge, Tom
Chip, Terry & Sarge took the singles matches. Dick, Chip (again), and Tom won the Ugly Sisters side game.
