Today’s morning round is on Oxmoor’s ‘Valley’ course.
The Valley is a tree-lined layout with rolling fairways and modest elevation changes. The first tee is beautiful – perched high on a bluff with views of the surrounding hills. The routing is out-and-back, running two miles down a narrow valley before returning to the clubhouse. Some large bunkers and a number of lakes make things interesting.
Fairways are still pretty wet so it’s cart path only again. Oh well.
The game is ‘whack and hack’, also known as ‘hi/low’. It’s foursome vs. foursome. Each member of the foursome plays their own ball throughout the round. At the completion of a hole, the team’s lowest net score (whack) is combined with the team’s highest net score (hack) to make the team score for the hole. The team with the lowest team score wins each hole. The team winning the most holes takes the match.
> Team 1 – Don, Jerry, Terry, Ed
> Team 2 – Bill, Mike, Dick, Chip
> Team 3 – Brian, Sarge, Tom, Ron
Team 3 took honors, winning 6 holes. Team 2 was runner-up wining 4. In last place was team 1 with 2.
For the afternoon round we played a crowd favorite game, ‘Jerry Ball’, on the Backyard par-3 course. It’s mano a mano. The score on each hole does not matter. After each player in the foursome is on the putting surface (regardless of the number of strokes it took to get there), the player closest to the pin gets ‘2’ points. The next closest player gets ‘1’ point. The player with the most points at the end of the round in each of the foursomes wins the match
> Match 1 – Ed, Ron, Dick, Bill
> Match 2 – Don, Chip, Sarge, Tom
> Match 3 – Jerry, Terry, Brian, Mike
Ron, Chip & Brian took honors.
Dinner & libation was at the huge ‘Twin Peaks’ restaurant in Hoover.
