The Craigielaw Golf Club is the newest course in East Lothian. Designed by Donald Steel, it opened in 2001 on a portion of the Craigielaw farm in the village of Aberlady, adjacent to Kilspindie.
Like most of the courses in this area, Craigielaw has fantastic views over the Firth of Forth towards Edinburgh & Fife and of Gullane Hill. Large, tough greens and lots of bunkers. The clubhouse has a very non-traditional, more American kind of feel.
Dinner was at ‘The Grange’, a restaurant & steakhouse on the main drag in North Berwick. At least a couple of us had one of ‘Fat Matt’s Burgers’. Matt even stopped by to say hi. Hard to beat!
We visited the Golfer’s Rest pub for a pint and ran into some golfing buddies of our host, Tom Hill. They told us the story of a hole at North Berwick GC they jokingly call ‘Hill’s Hollow’. Tom can no longer reach the green with his tee shot, so he now drives the ball up through a valley to the green. They suggested we pull his leg by telling him we heard scuttlebutt that the village was petitioning to rename the hole (to ‘Hill’s Hollow’). We’ll get him in the morning!
