The ‘Glen Golf Club’, also known as the ‘North Berwick East Links’ was designed in 1906 by Jame Braid and Ben Sayers. It was built as an overflow to the original North Berwick course.
The Glen follows a traditional ‘out-and-back’ layout. The first hole is a real bear with a long climb up a headland. After that are some great golf with views of the town, the Firth of Forth and Bass Rock. The weather wasn’t as pleasant as yesterday – overcast with a ‘testing wind’. Our forecaddie, Dennis, was a club member who lived off one of the upper fairways. Good fun.
The original plan for post-golf activity was to catch a 30-minute train into Edinburgh and check out a few of the more notable pubs. Sounded good but didn’t anticipate our later tee time at the Glen so we decided to explore a few of North Berwick’s finest instead.
First stop was the ‘Auld Hoose’, a traditional pub with a nice cask ale selection. Alas, no food but some great chatter with a few gents who might have been sitting at the bar for a while. A long while. Next up, the ‘Golfer’s Rest’ for a pint. The Rest is another traditional Scottish pub with a selection of real ales, but no food served in the evening. Very popular.
We were able to get a table for dinner at what turned out to be a remarkably popular Italian restaurant – the family run ‘Bella Italia’. Bill won the best meal choice award with his order of a mutant calzone.
