Our Open tickets were for the Wednesday practice round, and Thursday’s 1st round. We took the train from Chester to Hoylake where Royal Liverpool is to avoid the parking congestion. An older gentleman struck up a conversation on the ride and guided us through short cuts to get to the venue. Turns out he was a member at R.L.
The weather was great both days. You can tell you are in the UK when the options for refreshments include a Loch Loman Whiskey booth (free samples!!) and the ‘Open Arms’ beer tent. Civilized these Brits are! To be expected, most of the big names were there. On Thursday we intended to stop by the famous par-3, 17th hole for a few minutes and ended up watching the carnage for a few hours.
It was great to connect with my Village golfing buddy Bob Kitteridge and his partner Dorcus. Bob had tickets for the Wednesday practice and Sunday’s final round. He’s staying across the border in Wales with friends.
Chester is an ancient walled city with Roman, Viking, & Norman influences. Canals, ruins, and pubs (!). A fun place to spend a few days.
Friday morning, we checked out of the Mill and drove the 3-1/2 hour ride to Heathrow and home.
