Our last round of golf in Wales!
The Conwy Golf Club is a very traditional links-style course located on the Morfa Conwy peninsula. Founded in 1860 it was designed by Jack Morris, a nephew of Old Tom Morris. The club has hosted a number of championships, most recently the Curtis Cup in ’21.
Weather conditions were dreary with overcast skies and on/off drizzle. It’s a shame too as the course has 360-degree views. To the south is Conwy Mountain. North the Great Orme & Irish Sea. East the Conwy estuary and river. West views are of Anglesey. Still incredible, even with the crappy weather.
Days earlier, on the way from London, a tire pressure sensor light in our rental vehicle came on. We filled the tire in Porthmadog and all seemed well. At the Conwy course, however, it went totally flat. Andrew, the head professional, helped us out by securing a service gent who removed a large nail and repaired the tire. Good guy.
After golf we left Wales and headed for Chester, England. Our lodging for the next three nights is at the Mill Hotel (originally a corn mill) which sits along the Shropshire Union Canal in Chester. It’s a short walk to Chester Station which we’ll be using for transport to the Open at Royal Liverpool.
Things were pretty lively in town due to the Open crowds. We hit up the ‘Artichoke’, an excellent pub along the canal. Close to the hotel was ‘Ye Old Cottage Inn’, a community pub and repeat CAMRA ‘pub of the year’ with a fine collection of cask ales. We had a fun time with a lively bunch of locals.
Tomorrow, we’re off to the Open!
